Aldactone (Spironolactone) is a mild diuretic and generally is used to treat high blood pressure, efficiently lowering the retention of water and salt. Aldactone acts by reducing the amount of aldosterone secreted by the adrenal gland, which is the hormone primarily responsible for water regulation in the body. This effect is beneficial to competitive bodybuilders, who need to shed subcutaneous water before a showing.
When used medically to treat hypertension, the initial recommended dosage in adults is 50 mg to 100 mg per day in divided doses. It may take two weeks for a maximum response to be achieved.The dosage may be adjusted later depending on the individual needs of the patient. When used (off-label) by male bodybuilders to increase muscle definition or athletes to reduce weight before a weigh-in, a dosage of 100 mg per day in a single morning application, is most common. This may be continued for 3 to 5 days prior to the event, and will often result in a harder and more defined appearance to the muscles (or substantial reduction in body weight prior to rehydration). A bodybuilder's goal post cycle is to speed up the process of normalization as much as possible. This includes recovery of the HPTA and increasing levels of natural testosterone production to a normal level. The way in which testosterone is brought back up post cycle is through eliminating negative feedback. Sprironolactone can be run at the end of treatment with nolvadex and clomid and alongside HCG. This will have an effect on reducing the quantity of side effects from the HCG such as water retention and acne, and will also provide a synergistic effect with the clomid or nolvadex treatment to reduce water retention and halt additional side effects.

Bodybuilders use Aldactone almost exclusively during the last week before a competition. Since this causes neither a dramatic nor an immediately noticeable draining effect, it is usually taken over 5-6 days in a dosage of 2 tablets of 50 mg daily. Both male and female athletes take it. The main problems in men consist of gynecomastia and possible impo-tence. Other side effects can be low blood pressure, muscle spasms, dizziness, gastrointestinal pain, vomiting, irregular pulse rate, and fatigue.  Possible side effects from the use of aldactone like any other diuretic include cramping, diarrhea, dehydration and weakness.
