Humulin R is a fast-acting form of the hormone insulin. It works by lowering levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This lowers the amount of glucose in the blood, which helps to treat diabetes.Humulin R is for subcutaneous injection only. . It should not be used intravenously or intramuscularly. The body is unable to use the sugars in the bloodstream, when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. And the body is not getting the energy it needs to function, and so it thinks its starving. This can lead to muscle weakness. The body needs the supplements of insulin.
Humulin R (insulin (human recombinant)) U-100, when used subcutaneously, is usually given three or more times daily before meals. Insulin regular is injected under the skin. Choose a different place in your injection skin area each time you use this medication. If you are using an insulin pump, do NOT dilute Humulin R or mix it with any other type of insulin. Do not mix Humulin R with another insulin unless your doctor tells you to. Humulin R begins lowering blood sugar within 30 to 60 minutes after an injection. The effect usually lasts from 4 to 12 hours. The average range of total daily insulin requirement for maintenance therapy in insulin-treated patients without severe insulin resistance lies between 0.5 and 1 unit/kg/day. In prepubertal children it usually varies from 0.7 to 1 unit/kg/day. Initial dosages for patients with diabetes are often lower, e.g., 0.2 to 0.4 units/kg/day.
Humulin R may cause drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, or blurred vision. Avoid drinking alcohol. Your blood sugar may become dangerously low if you drink alcohol while using insulin. If you take it with alcohol or certain medicines these effects may be worse. Use it with caution. Whenever you use insulin regular, be sure to eat a meal or snack within 15 to 30 minutes. Do not use extra insulin to make up a missed dose.
Humulin R vials not in-use should be stored in a refrigerator, (2° to 8°C [36° to 46°F]), but not in the freezer. The Humulin R vial currently in-use can be kept unrefrigerated as long as it is kept as cool as possible (below 30°C [86°F]) away from heat and light.
